Sports Podcasters Liz Lapp & Karen Uyenco Are Taking Their Hoops Off to Bring You the Spiciest Takes on Sports — New Luminary Original Out Now

New York, NY

Luminary, the leading subscription-based podcast and audio entertainment network, announced today it is releasing a new Luminary Original podcast in partnership with sports podcasters Liz Lapp and Karen Uyenco.

“We were tired of the world of Sports being dominated by men,” explained Liz and Karen, when asked why they wanted to create this show. “As marketers, we saw that even though women were a huge part of fans, audiences, and consumers of pro-sports marketing continued to be targeted to men, created by men. We wanted a woman's POV, but didn’t want to have to wait for the industry to catch up.”

Hoops Off is just that: sports talk from a woman’s point of view. Each week, Liz Lapp and Karen Uyenco take their hoops off to deliver the saltiest, spiciest takes on how sports intersect with women’s issues, culture and society. Sports journalists, athletes, activists, agents, talent, comedians, and more join them to bring additional perspectives to the discussion.

About Liz Lapp

A California native, Liz Lapp was raised to be a Los Angeles Lakers fan from day one. That’s right, not the Warriors, but the Lakers. She never played basketball, but her affinity for the sport only grew during the Showtime Lakers years in the 80s. In college she studied Advertising and Art and graduated from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco with a major in advertising. Her professional journey in marketing, art, tech and social media has taken her from the West Coast to the East Coast and back again. She currently resides in Yucca Valley and is the owner of the Hi Desert Times magazine shop in Twentynine Palms.

About Karen Uyenco

Born in the Philippines and raised in The Bay (with summers in Houston, Texas) Karen (@hoopswithkare) fell in love with basketball when she was 10 and one of her brothers took to teaching her the game with aspirations to make her the next female Michael Jordan. Karen played ball in middle and high school, but unfortunately stopped playing organized ball when she realized she wouldn’t grow past 5’2’. Karen’s aspirations shifted from being a baller to studying broadcast in college to eventually make her way into sports via a mic, but life happened and Karen focused on marketing for her 9-to-5 career. The professional connection with Liz and their love of ball brought her dream of talking sports back in her life with the birth of Hoops Off. Karen is a Warriors fan and her fave players are Cheryl Miller, Candace Parker, MJ, Muggsy, Ray Allen & Steph Curry. She continues to live in the Bay Area with her two kiddos and works in SF.
